Carotid Artery Surgery Information

How to prepare for carotid surgery

Before your doctor commences on the CEA, specific tests he may want to conduct will give more detailed information about your arteries. Examples of tests used to prepare for CEA include:

  • Carotid angiography: This test is an invasive X-ray procedure [4] involving dye to highlight the artery so that the blockages can be more visible.
  • Carotid ultrasound: this involves using sound waves to create a picture of the artery and measure the blood flow.
  • Computed tomography angiography: This is also a type of x-ray that provides a 3D view of the arteries. It also involves the use of dye.
  • Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA): This involves using magnetic and radio waves to create a picture of the artery. It may also include using contrast dye to give a clearer image.
