Bladder Suspension Surgery – What You Need to Know

Why You May Be Recommended a Bladder Suspension Surgery?

Bladder suspension surgery also known as bladder lift is done to help treat stress incontinence. Stress incontinence is a condition that causes urine leakage when there is an increased pressure in your abdomen during certain actions such as coughing, lifting heavy weight, and sneezing. It occurs due to weak pelvic muscle or loosened ligaments.

Someone suffering from stress incontinence may release a few drops or a large flow of urine when they cough, sneeze, laugh, exercise or jump. While a lot of people mistake stress incontinence for overactive bladder (OAB) [1], it is important to know that they are different and can occur at the same time. OAB involves an overwhelming urge to urinate immediately, whereas incontinence involves leakage of urine from the bladder.

If you are experiencing the symptoms of both stress incontinence and OAB, you are likely to have what is known as mixed incontinence. The best approach to manage both conditions is behavioral and physical therapy and lifestyle changes. These may be all you need.

However, if your case is severe and your symptoms are extreme, your doctor may recommend a bladder suspension surgery.
