Diagnosis

The first step to proper detection of the presence of tumors in the mammary gland is to go for a proper checkup with a healthcare professional. The doctor then goes on to do a physical examination and also goes through the medical history of the individual in order to know what the symptoms mean. This review by the doctor then brings about various conditions that may have similar signs. In order for proper diagnosis, some tests and scans are done, such as:
- Ultrasound: this scan involves the use of sound waves to get clear pictures of the tissues in the breast. This helps to identify the exact defect in the mammary gland. It shows whether it is a cyst or a tumor.
- Mammogram: this scan helps to confirm if there is an atypical area in the breast tissues. This helps the doctor see the tissues underneath the surface area of the breast.
- Biopsy: this test acts as a confirmation for the doctor after the above scans have been done. This process involves cutting out a part of the affected area and then taking it to the laboratory in order to confirm the presence of cancerous cells and to identify exactly the type of cancer [3] it is.
