How to diagnose paraneoplastic syndromes?

Your doctor will use a physical exam, multiple tests, and a medical history to Diagnose paraneoplastic syndromes.
- Neurological exam: Paraneoplastic syndromes are known to disrupt your nervous system. They disrupt the function of your muscle function and brain. Your doctor may recommend certain tasks to help you observe how your nervous system works. Any changes in your memory, coordination, and strength will also be observed by your doctor.
- Imaging: Your doctor may use imaging tests like ultrasounds, MRIs, and CT scans to check if you have any tumor that can lead to symptoms.
- Blood tests: Blood tests can help your doctor know if you have any antibodies associated with paraneoplastic syndromes. It also helps your doctor rule out other factors, such as a metabolic condition, a hormone disorder, or an infection.
- Spinal tap: In some cases, your doctor may do a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) to check for any signs of antibodies destroying healthy cells in your cerebrospinal fluid. This test involves inserting a needle into your lower back to remove a fluid sample. After a while, your doctor will check the liquid for any antibodies.
