Skin Cancer on Black Skin – What It Looks Like, Signs, and More

Melanoma

Melanoma is the most volatile type of skin cancer. It is relatively rare, but it grows and spreads quickly. Treatment must start early and must be done aggressively.

If you have darker skin, you will experience more melanomas in areas not affected by the sun. You may also experience melanomas on mucous membranes, such as the:

  • Genitals
  • Mouth
  • Eyes

You can also have melanomas in these areas:

  • Beneath the nails
  • Between the toes
  • On the soles of the feet

In most cases, melanomas go unnoticed in black skin because they usually occur on the feet, and doctors don’t pay much attention to these parts.

You can detect it easily by looking for a freckle or mole that:

  • It has an unusual color
  • Has many colors
  • Changes in size or shape
  • Is swollen or smelling
  • Has an abnormal shape

It would help to talk with your healthcare provider to learn more about melanomas.
