They are grouped based on the part of the aorta that is affected. Aortic dissection can occur in the ascending or descending part of the aorta.
Type A
Type A dissection is a type of aortic dissection in which the tear occurs in your ascending aorta, irrespective of where the first year appeared.
Type B
Type B dissection is a type of aortic dissection in which the tear occurs in the descending aorta. They are usually less severe and life threatening than type A dissections if they don’t affect the ascending aorta.
