Recovery of cataract surgery

If your cataract surgery is successful, it would take days or weeks before one recovers completely from the surgery. For a few days after the surgery, your eyes may feel itchy and sore, you may also experience some tearing, and may be difficult for you to see well in bright light.

Your doctor may recommend eye drops after the surgery to help prevent infection, it is important that you follow your doctor’s directions for using these drops. You will also be advised to avoid activities that would strain the eyes or put pressure on the eyes, activities such as driving, bending over, or picking up heavy things. You are also to refrain from getting soap or water into the eyes, rubbing or pressing the eye, if need be your surgeon may recommend that you wear eyeglasses to protect your eyes.

Eyeglasses would help protect the site of your surgery so your eye can heal faster. You may even need to wear the glasses while you sleep. If you experience any unusual pain during the recovery period or you feel that your eye is not healing as it should, you should immediately tell your doctor.

Usually, a maximum of 8 weeks is what it takes before one completely heals from the surgery, although it can be sooner, what you need is your ophthalmologist’s conclusion, to know how active you can be after the surgery. Cataract surgery is most successful if done by a professional. But don’t expect your vision to be perfect until after some time. You may still need to wear glasses.
