Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Surgery options

Surgery can be used to treat COPD in some people. Your doctor will only recommend surgery if you condition is severe.

Bullectomy

Big air spaces develop in your lungs when the walls of the air sacs are damaged. These large spaces are known as bullae. They also have a negative effect on your breathing. Bullectomy involves removing the large spaces to help your lungs work better.

Other surgical options for treating COPD include:

  • Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS)
  • Lung transplant
