8 Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes

Glp-(Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) Mimetics-Exenatide, Dulaglutide, Liraglutide, Lixisenatide and Semaglutide

Exenatide, dulaglutide, lixisenatide, liraglutide, and semaglutide are glucagon-like peptides-1 (GLP-1) mimetics administered as an injection. They have similar functions to the naturally occurring hormone glucagon-like peptide 1. These functions are; enhancing insulin secretion in response to glucose, preventing glucagon release after eating (glucagon increases blood sugar level), and slowing down emptying of food from the stomach to keep you feeling satisfied. This treatment is also given to help people lose weight.

GLP-1 drugs also help reduce the risk of heart disease [6] in people who have once experienced a heart attack. GLP-1 drugs can be used as an addition to regulating glucose control when insulin treatment is not available. However, in the UK, this treatment is given to overweight people with a body mass index (BMI) over 36.

Side effects of using this drug include feeling sick, headaches. Hypoglycemia is usually rare unless you take medications that make you prone to hypoglycemia.
