Aspirin and Diabetes: Safety, Heart Health, and More

Can diabetic patients take Aspirin?

Aspirin has the ability to thin blood; therefore, frequent ingestion could elevate the risk of severe bleeding. It could also include mild cases like bruising easily and nose bleeds.  The bleeding can get very serious, cases as gastrointestinal tract bleeding or brain bleeding. This is why medical doctors always make sure the advantages of taking Aspirin are higher than its disadvantages.

The research was done in 2019 by the American Diabetes Association. They discovered that doctors prescribe daily Aspirin at a dose of 75 to 162 milligrams per day for diabetic patients and a history of cardiovascular disease. This association discovered that daily Aspirin could be recommended for people with diabetes and are at a high risk of cardiovascular disease. People older than 50 are at a higher risk of having cardiovascular disease. Other people at high risk are:

  • People that have a personal history of high blood pressure, dyslipidemia (presence of excess or insufficient lipids in the body), and chronic renal disease or albuminuria
  • People that have a family history of early cardiovascular disease; males younger than 55 and females younger than 65
  • People that smoke regularly

Patients need to discuss the risks of bleeding events with a doctor. Doctors also try to assess the risks associated with bleeding before prescribing Aspirin.
