Prediabetes – Causes, Risk Factors, Symptoms & Treatments

Unhealthy Diet

Another risk factor for prediabetes is the regular intake of unhealthy diets. Diets with high sugar content and processed foods tend to raise the blood pressure of the body and also increase the level of LDL [4]. Therefore, regular intake of such diets puts you at the risk of developing prediabetes.

Smoking

Cigarettes are known to contain a substance called nicotine [5]. This substance tends to decrease the sensitivity of the body cells to insulin, thereby increasing the glucose level in the body. There are various other chemicals present in cigarettes that cause inflammation, making it quite difficult for those body cells to actually absorb insulin.

Family History of Type 2 Diabetes

Certain medical conditions are hereditary, and prediabetes is one of them. In situations where a close family member has a history of T2D, there are chances of you also developing prediabetes.
