Type 2 Diabetes Complications

Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHNS)

This is a rare but serious condition. The condition is described as when blood sugars are too high but no ketones are present. The hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state is an emergency condition that must be treated immediately. It is more common in older people or people who have an underlying illness or infection.

Symptoms of HHNS include:

  • Confusion
  • Loss of vision
  • Hallucination
  • Extreme thirst
  • Weakness on one side of the body
  • Fever [5]

It is important to always monitor your blood sugar, especially when you are ill. Seek emergency help if your sugar is too high and you are experiencing the symptoms of HHNS.
