What is Gout? Common Facts to Know

Gout is a type of arthritis disease characterized by redness, tenderness in joints, and severe pain. It is a general term that describes a wide range of conditions caused by a buildup of uric acid in the body. [1]

Uric acid is a product of purines, which is a part of many foods. The crystallization of these compounds can cause kidney stones, painful arthritis, and the kidney filtering tubules’ blockage, with uric acid crystals, which causes kidney failure. Usually, this buildup affects the feet.

Individuals can experience gout suddenly, sometimes in the middle of the night, making the feet have a burning sensation. There are crucial things to note about this condition. Hence, this article will address its symptoms and other vital details.

Symptoms of Gout

Here are the prominent signs and symptoms that are associated with gout:

  1. Intense joint pain: Typically, gout affects the large joint in the feet, usually the big toe. However, it’s crucial to note that gout can occur in any of the feet’ joints. Some of the common joints affected by gout include the ankles, elbows, wrists, fingers and knees. In most cases, the pain may extend for the first four to twelve hours when it starts.
  2. A heightened level of discomfort: Aside from the joints’ pain, gout also causes high levels of distress in the body. Please note that this discomfort is different from joint pains. Individuals may feel discomfort, with the exemption of any severe pains. Unfortunately, this may extend for a few days or weeks.
  3. Inflammation and redness of affected joints: One of the most prominent gout symptoms is the appearance of the joints. The joints will appear swollen, tender, and red. When touched, those joints will feel warm as well. Generally, the redness of the joint is common in active arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis.
  4. Limited range of movement: Individuals with gout usually experience a reduced range of motion. Hence, it may be difficult or impossible to exercise due to the joints of the fingers, elbows, and ankles.
