What Is Coronary Heart Disease?

Anatomy of Coronary heart disease

There are four major coronary arteries found on the surface of the heart. They include:

  • Left anterior descending artery
  • Left circumflex artery
  • Right main coronary artery
  • Left main coronary artery

The primary purpose of these arteries is to supply nutrient-rich blood and oxygen to your heart. The heart is a muscle that is constantly pumping blood throughout your body. It requires oxygen to function properly. So, any restriction to blood flow in the heart can affect its function. Studies show that a healthy heart pumps about 3,000 gallons of blood through the body daily.

Like other organs and muscles in the body, your heart needs an adequate amount of blood to function properly. Coronary heart disease occurs when blood flow to the heart is restricted.
