Herpes Simplex – Diagnosis and Treatment

Treatment for Herpes Simplex

There is still no particular cure for herpes. But various treatment options can help relieve the symptoms.

Possible treatment for herpes simplex include:

Medication

Blisters typically improve on their own, without any medical treatment. But if you experience severe or frequent outbreaks, a doctor or clinician can prescribe antiviral medication. Antiviral medication can help reduce the frequency of episodes you are experiencing and ease the severity of your symptoms.

Medication options include:

  • acyclovir
  • famciclovir
  • valacyclovir
  • foscarnet or cidofovir for HSV infections that resist other medications

Antiviral medications can also reduce your chances of transmitting the virus during an episode or shedding it when there are no symptoms.

These medications are mostly in the form of pills and creams. If your symptoms are severe, your doctor or clinician may recommend an injection of medication.
