When Fluid Fills the Lungs: Understanding and Treating Pleural Effusion

What Is the Relationship between Pleural Effusion and Cancer?

Various studies show that pleural effusions can occur when cancer cells spread to the pleura or block the flow of normal in the pleura. Studies also show that people who undergo certain cancer treatments, like chemotherapy or radiation therapy are more likely to experience pleural effusion.

According to studies, the following cancers are more likely to result in pleural effusions:

  • Lung cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Leukemia
  • Melanoma
  • Cervical cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Mesothelioma, which results from exposure to asbestos

If you are going to need repeated drainage, your doctor will carry out pleurodesis, a procedure that involves placing a shunt which sends the fluid away from your chest. Your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics, if you have or are susceptible to infection. Other anti-inflammatory drugs or steroids may help reduce pain and inflammation. It is important to discuss other treatment options for cancer with your doctor.

People who are receiving treatment for cancer may also have weakened immune systems, making them more susceptible to infections or other complications.
