When Fluid Fills the Lungs: Understanding and Treating Pleural Effusion

Diagnosis

There are various diagnostic procedures for pleural effusion. For example, your doctor may perform a physical examination and listen to your lungs using a stethoscope. In some cases, your doctor may also recommend a chest X-ray to diagnose pleural effusion.

Other recommended tests for pleural effusion include:

  • Chest ultrasound
  • CT scan
  • Thoracentesis, where the doctor removes some pleural fluid for analysis. This procedure is done by inserting a needle into the chest cavity and suctioning the fluid into a syringe. The fluid will be drained from your chest cavity and tested to know the cause.
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Pleural biopsy

In some cases, your doctor may also decide to perform a pleural biopsy, which involves taking a tissue sample from your pleura. This procedure is done by inserting a small needle from outside the chest wall into the chest cavity. If your doctor cannot determine the type of pleural effusion you have, they may recommend a thoracoscopy, a surgical procedure that allows your doctor to see inside your chest cavity via a fiber-optic camera.

Thoracoscopy is done by making a few small incisions in your chest area while you are under general anesthesia. Then, a camera will be inserted through one of the incisions and the surgical tool through the other to remove a small amount of fluid or tissue for analysis.

Conclusion

Pleural effusion is a condition that occurs when fluids accumulate in the lining within the lungs. It is one of the most common lung conditions. Treatment for this condition depends on the cause. It is important to contact your doctor if you experience any signs or symptoms of the condition. Early detection increases the chances of having successful treatment.
