What Drugs or Procedures Are Employed to Treat Scalp Psoriasis?

To treat mild cases of scalp psoriasis, your doctor may suggest the following creams, lotions, or gels:

Corticosteroids.
Cooking tar.
Salicylic acid shampoo or lotion.
Anthralin.

Your healthcare practitioner might suggest in situations of scalp psoriasis that are more severe or pervasive:

Injections of medicine. Your doctor will inject medication directly into your plaques, a vein in your arm, or into your skin with a small needle. These drugs can include ustekinumab, etanercept, or adalimumab.
Oral medications Oral medications are tablets or pills that you ingest along with water. These drugs could contain methotrexate, cyclosporine, or acitretin.
Phototherapy. UV light from specialized lamps, often ultraviolet B (UVB), is used in phototherapy. Sunlight’s ultraviolet light wavelengths can treat a variety of skin conditions, including scalp psoriasis.

Psoriasis on the scalp may be challenging to treat. Because of the uniqueness of your body, some therapies might not work on it. Consult your healthcare practitioner to determine the best course of action for you.
