Zinc therapy

Zinc is a vital mineral that helps heal wounds and topical zinc may help treat blisters. A 2001 study showed that a cream containing zinc oxide and glycine reduced the timeline of cold sores compared to placebo cream.
A more recent study discovered that zinc oxide may also play a role in stopping the herpes simplex virus from entering the cells. A 2005 study showed reduced frequency of outbreaks when participants received zinc sulfate supplements. The participants took 22.5 mg twice a day for 2 months, missed 6 months, then twice a day for another 2 months. For topical treatments, you will have to apply a zinc oxide cream four times a day.
Do not stop using the topical zinc oxide cream until your sores heal. Take a zinc supplement [4] daily as a preventive measure.
