Angioedema
Angioedema refers to swelling beneath the skin caused by the accumulation of water. The swelling may be painful and it may affect the face, lips, tongue, and airways. Angioedema is not a typical symptom of hives but it sometimes cooccurs with it [7]. The sudden onset of this swelling can be scary, but it sometimes clears up within a short time. You should still get it looked at immediately. Angioedema can be life-threatening in certain cases, especially when it affects the airways. It can impair breathing and be a sign of anaphylaxis. If you experience symptoms like this, call an ambulance. You may give yourself an epinephrine shot if you have one.
