Atopic Vs Contact Dermatitis: What’s The Difference?

Diagnosis

Doctors consider many factors before diagnosing contact and atopic dermatitis. The appearance of the rash, its location and a thorough review of your personal or family medical history. In most cases, your doctor may need only a visual test.

Your healthcare provider may recommend a biopsy if you need more testing. The biopsy must be done during the acute phase of eczema to easily differentiate the two skin disorders.

Your doctor may consider these factors during diagnosis:

Testing

Patch testing is primarily used for contact allergies. It involves applying small patches of certain allergens to your skin. The patches should be left on the skin for 24 to 72 hours for it to dry. The patch is then removed and then the skin is observed for any reaction.
