Heat Rash Treatment Options

Heat rash is a skin condition which is most common in hot weather. This skin condition can be quite painful, and is also known as sweat rash, prickly heat or miliaria rubra. [1] Heat rash is identified by little clusters of raised, tiny bumps on an irritated and red skin. The area may also experience a burning, prickly or itchy sensation. Heat rash may appear on any part of the body, but is most common around the following areas:

  • Under the arms
  • In the neck
  • Near the groin

Excessive sweating is a major cause of heat rash. [2] Excessive sweating causes the blockage of the sweat pores, which then results in heat rash. In most cases, heat rashes aren’t life threatening or serious. In fact, it may go away on its own, without any treatment. However, heat rashes can cause a lot of discomfort and can worsen if excessive sweating continues. There are several ways to treat heat rashes. Some treatments work at soothing the skin or cooling it down. While others reduce itching and inflammation and also prevent infection. Here are some ways to treat heat rashes.

Cool Showers and Baths

Heat rashes tend to ease up after the skin has been cooled down. Taking cool showers or baths can help achieve this. Gently washing the skin can also help unclog the pores. Unclogging the pores is very important since one major cause of heat rash is clogged pores. Also make sure that the skin is dried properly after bathing, as wet skin can cause further irritation.
