How Hyperpigmentation Affects Black Skin

Sunscreen

Too much exposure to the UV rays from the sun can cause even darker spots on your skin. Therefore, using sunscreen will help treat hyperpigmentation.

Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you go out on areas of your body that are not covered by clothing. Additionally, you can also try to avoid the sun during treatment.

Other treatment options

There are some more serious treatment methods for hyperpigmentation. These options are used when other simpler treatment methods are not working. They include:

  • Chemical peels: These involve gradually removing cells that contain melanin in the epidermis. Some examples of chemical peels are salicylic acid and glycolic acid.
  • Laser treatment: This involves applying a laser of a specific wavelength to the hyperpigmented area. The laser will destroy cells that contain a pigment that darkens the skin.

These treatments should only be done by a professional healthcare provider.
