Molluscum Contagiosum: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Symptoms of Molluscum Contagiosum

It could take up to 6 months before you or your child experiences symptoms of infection if you or they come into touch with the M. contagiosum virus. Typically, it takes 2 to 7 weeks after contracting the molluscum contagiosum virus for these symptoms to appear.

A few painless lesions may start to form in a cluster. These lumps may show up singly or in a cluster of up to 20. They are typically:

  • Tiny, smooth, and shining in appearance.
  • Pink, flesh-colored, or white.
  • Firmly constructed, dome-shaped, and with a dent or dimple in the center.
  • Containing a central core of waxy substance.
  • Between 2 and 5 millimeters in diameter, or around the size of a pencil’s top rubber and the head of a pin.
  • It appears especially on the face, belly, chest, arms, and legs of infants, or the inner thigh, genitals, and abdomen of adults, but not on the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet.
