Treatment of Syphilis

The specific antibiotics used to treat syphilis differ depend on the location of the patient. It is important to use drugs prescribed by a doctor.
Penicillin [5] is one of the most widely used antibiotics and is usually effective in treating syphilis. People who are allergic to penicillin will likely be treated with different antibiotics. Examples are doxycycline, azithromycin, ceftriaxone. Tertiary syphilis will require multiple injections at weekly intervals. Neurosyphilis requires intravenous (IV) penicillin daily.
This will often require a brief hospital stay. Damages caused by the late syphilis cannot be reversed. Penicillin is the only recommended treatment for pregnant women with syphilis. Women who are allergic to penicillin can undergo desensitization process that would allow them take penicillin. The newborn baby should be tested for congenital syphilis. And if infected, should receive treatment. Jarisch- Herxheimer reaction is commonly experienced on the first day of treatment. Symptoms include migraine, a fever and nausea. [6] This reaction usually doesn’t last more than a day.
