Depigmentation and Skin Grafting

Depigmentation is often recommended in cases where the vitiligo is widespread, covering almost the entirety of the skin. Depigmentation involves the removal of the color in areas of skin unaffected by vitiligo to achieve uniformity of color. It is done by applying a depigmenting agent [6] to unaffected skin. With time, these areas of the skin become light enough to blend with discolored areas. It may be done up to two times a day for nine months or more. The process is irreversible.
If you have stable vitiligo unresponsive to other forms of treatment, doctors may recommend skin grafting [7]. This surgical procedure involves transplanting areas of small pigmented skin to areas of unpigmented skin.
