What Is Hidradenitis Suppurativa?

Effects of Diets on Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Studies show that what you eat can signif affect the progression of your HS. Some foods may cause flare-ups, while some may prevent them. Although there is no recommended diet for people with the disease, small studies and anecdotal evidence show that the following foods may worsen the symptoms of HS:

  • Dairy products, such as cheese, ice cream, milk, butter, and cow’s milk may increase the levels of some hormones.
  • Sugary foods, like candy, soda, and boxed cereals, which may elevate blood glucose and lead to inflammation
  • Brewer’s yeast, seen in products like beer, wine, and soy sauce, because it can result in an immune system reaction in people predisposed to wheat intolerance

On the other hand, some foods may help relieve the symptoms of HS, including:

  • Foods that contain high levels of fiber, like fruits, vegetables, and oats, which may help in balancing hormone and blood sugar levels
  • Foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids, including salmon, sardines, and walnuts, because they may help in treating inflammation.
  • Zinc supplements may help strengthen the immune system.
