Hypothyroidism Meal Plans: Foods to Eat, Foods to Avoid

Foods Rich in Zinc

Zinc helps improve thyroid function. It can be beneficial in managing or prevent thyroid disorders. In a 2015, a study examined the effects of zinc on thyroid function in hypothyroid women, and it was found to help improve thyroid function both alone and in combination with selenium. [3]

Foods rich in zinc include pork, chicken, crab, beef, legumes, pumpkin seeds, fortified cereals, and oysters.

Selenium

Selenium is produced naturally in the thyroid gland. This important nutrient plays a role in hormone production and metabolism in the thyroid gland. It also has antioxidant activity. [4]

According to a review paper, maintain normal selenium levels in the body is critical in the prevention of thyroid disease and the maintenance of thyroid health. [5] If needed, selenium can be supplemented as part of the treatment for some thyroid conditions.

Selenium is a micronutrient, which means your body only needs it in small amounts. If you take above the quantity your body requires to function well, it might become toxic to your health system.

Foods containing selenium which you can include in your diet are eggs, chicken, whole wheat bread, beef, Brazil nuts, and seafood such as shrimp and tuna.[6]
