Hypothyroidism Meal Plans: Foods to Eat, Foods to Avoid

Gluten-Rich Foods

Gluten is a protein substance commonly found in cereal grains after the starch has been removed. Rye, barley, and wheat are among the most common gluten-rich foods.

Celiac disease (chronic gluten intolerance) and hypothyroidism often co-occur. [11] Consuming foods high in gluten when you have celiac disease can severely irritate your digestive tract and inhibit your ability to absorb thyroid hormone replacement medication.

Even though there’s no definitive evidence that following a gluten-free diet can help treat hypothyroidism, removing it from your diet can improve your outlook if you also have celiac disease. Additionally, a recent study found that a gluten-free diet may also improve thyroid function in people with Hashimoto’s disease who don’t have celiac disease. [12] Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune cause of hypothyroidism.
