Bedwetting: Causes & Treatment

Risk Factors for Bedwetting

Among the biggest risk factors for developing bedwetting in childhood are gender and heredity. Boys and girls can both have nocturnal enuresis episodes in their early years, typically between the ages of 3 and 5. But as boys get older, they are more likely to keep wetting the bed.

Furthermore, family history is important. If a parent, sibling, or other family member has experienced bedwetting, a child is more likely to experience it as well. There is a 70% possibility that you would bedwet if both of your parents were bedwetters as kids.

Children who have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) [3] are also more likely to pee in bed. Researchers are still working to completely grasp how bedwetting and ADHD are related.
