Varicose Vein Stripping (Phlebectomy)

How to Prepare for Varicose Vein Stripping

Firstly, your doctor will conduct a physical examination before the procedure. This will be done so that your doctor can determine where the nonworking valve is located.

Your doctor will likely use a handheld ultrasound device so they can get a better view of the veins and their valves. They may also order a dublex scan [4], which helps provide clear images of the affected veins and the amount of blood flow.

The dublex scan can also help rule out any clots, or thromboses in the veins. Thereby giving your doctor more details about the varicose veins.

Before the procedure, it is important to inform your doctor about any prescription or over-the-counter medication you are taking. Depending on the medication, your doctor may ask you to stop taking it temporarily weeks or days before the surgery, as some may cause heavy bleeding during the varicose vein stripping.

You should also arrange for someone else to drive you home after the procedure, as you would need to avoid stressing your legs until you fully recover. Varicose vein stripping is often performed using general anesthesia, which can make you drowsy and unable to drive for several hours.
