Soft Swelling
Umbilical hernia is characterized by a soft swelling around the navel. This swelling may not always be evident until the child cries, laughs, or performs any activity that engages the abdominal parts of the body. In extreme cases of umbilical hernia, the swelling is tender, painful and discolored.
Pain
Pain is another symptom of umbilical hernia. The bulge around the belly button in severe cases could become discomforting. The affected child or adult experience pain from the opening. Typically, the bulge would not be seen until the child cries, laughs, and etc. The case is different with severe umbilical hernia. Children or adults feel obvious pain from the opening.
