How to Prepare Your Face for Dermaplaning

Before carrying out this procedure, there are certain things you should do to ‘prep’ your skin.
- Avoid Exfoliation: It is advisable to avoid exfoliating your skin at least 3 days before your scheduled appointment. This is because over exfoliation can expose your skin to acne breakouts, redness, hyper/hypo pigmentation and dry skin.
- Stay Hydrated: You should drink a lot of water and eat plenty fruits before your appointment. This will help your skin remain healthy and refreshed. Staying hydrated before and after treatment helps to prevent any post-procedure discomfort or swelling.
- Inspect Your Face for Wounds: The skin has to be healthy before the treatment and free of all sores, cuts and wounds on the face. If there were cuts on the face before undergoing the treatment, it may compromise the post-procedure healing process.
- Avoid Exposing your Skin to the Sun: The face is a part of the body that is most likely to get sunburnt and damaged. Exposing your face to the sun can leave spots on your skin and the UV rays from the sun can damage your skin.
It can also lead to increased skin sensitivity, redness and irritation. Carrying out this procedure with these skin conditions will not be ideal. Wear a sunscreen [5] with at least SPF 30 when you go out during the day to prevent this from occuring.
- Reschedule Your Other Facial Appointments: Ensure you reorganize your appointments. For example, if you have earlier scheduled to get a botox injection, it is advisable to wait at least 2 to 3 weeks before or after your dermaplaning appointment.
To ensure that your treatment goes smoothly, it is necessary to consider the steps listed above.
