Symptoms

Food poisoning also known as food borne illness, it result from the consumption of spoilt, contaminated or toxic food. The presence of a virus, parasite or bacteria in the contaminated food causes the infection. The most common symptoms include vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. If you have food poisoning, the chances of it going undetected is low. This is because the symptoms of food poisoning are quite obvious and can take a toll on the body. The symptoms may however vary depending on the cause of the illness.

The onset of symptoms depends on the nature of the causative organism. The small intestine and large intestine have a 1 to 3 days incubation period. Food poisoning can however last from an hour to 28days. In most cases of food poisoning, the 3 or more of the following symptoms are seen.

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps [1]
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weakness
  • Dehydration
  • Hematuria (in severe cases).
