Yvonne Bignall felt her ‘world had come crashing down’ when she had been made redundant and was going through the break-up of a long-term relationship at the same time.
Fast-forward a little over 10 years and she now runs her own business, has run marathons, gives talks at overseas conferences and has visited Downing Street for talks with the Prime Minister’s aides.
To top it all off Yvonne, from Radstock, has now become a best-selling author on Amazon for her book - about creating a better life.
Suck it Up or Change has also been rated as a best-seller in the spiritual category for the online giant publishers.
Yvonne, 51, who runs YvonneB Limited to support women in business, said: “It was a surreal feeling when I heard the news about my book being a best-seller. I’m really grateful to all the people in the community who have supported me.”
The single mum, who was made redundant from her job as a personal assistant in 2004, overcame her fears to set up her own virtual PA firm and later a training consultancy.
Yvonne, an award-winning personal development educator and life motivator for both lifestyle and business, said: “I wrote the book because I wanted to help other women who may have got stuck in a rut to take action and create a better life.
“I have first-hand experience of this. When I was made redundant, it felt like the world came crashing down on me. I was also going through a break-up and having less than productive conversations with my son.
“I realised I had a choice – I could sink in this emotional madness or I could swim. I sank a little bit further before deciding to dive in and make changes.”
Yvonne said that she has seen a recurring theme with the women she works with – they get in their own way of success.
Yvonne, who previously visited Downing Street to look at the affordability of childcare and ways to run a sustainable business, said: “We make excuses – I can’t do this or that ‘because of the children’, ‘because I don’t have time’, or because it’s just ‘too hard’. We also complain that life is unfair when things don’t go our way.
“Our excuses usually reflect our fears – past failures or worries over ‘what ifs’. Fear is a massive barrier and it’s usually blown out of all proportion.
“I want people to wake up to their potential. If you know you need to make changes, then don’t wait - start today.”
The book looks at 7 Fs to improve our lives – fitness, freedom, family (and friends), paying it forward (giving back), being fearless, having fun and faith.
Yvonne, who has worked in the health, leisure and well-being industry for over 20 years, said: “It’s crucial we look after our health so that we have the energy and ability to do everything else. We only get one shot at this life.”
