Appendicitis – Types, Causes and Treatments

10 Possible Causes of Appendicitis

  • Enlarged lymphoid tissue in the appendix. When the lymphoid tissue in the appendix becomes swollen, it can increase the risk of having an obstruction. Enlarged Lymphoid tissue may occur due to infection or other immune system disorders.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease. Trauma or injury to the abdomen, whether internal or external can affect the appendix. For example, ulcerative colitis [1] or Crohn’s disease [2] can increase the risk of inflammation in the appendix, and cause appendicitis.
  • Genetic predisposition. Various studies show that certain genetic factors may be responsible for appendicitis. The risk of developing appendicitis is higher if you have a family member that has had the condition before.
  • Impeded gastrointestinal motility. Studies show that fibers promote gastrointestinal motility. They help prevent the development of obstructions by improving regular bowel movements. To promote gastrointestinal motility, it would help to consume lots of fibers daily.
  • Tumors in the gastrointestinal tract. Tumors in the gastrointestinal tract can cause obstruction or block the appendix. Tumors can be removed surgically or via prescribed drugs.
  • Age. Appendicitis can occur at any age. However, it is most common in people between ages 10 and 30. It is less likely to occur in older adults and young children.
  • Obstruction of the appendix by fecal matter. It is the most common cause of appendicitis. It occurs when passage through the appendix is blocked by feces. Asides from fecal matter, blockage may also occur due to foreign elements, or swollen lymphoid tissue [3]. Obstruction in the appendix can result in accumulation of bacteria and mucus, resulting in inflammation.
  • Complications from other abdominal surgeries. If you’ve had an abdominal surgery before, you are more likely to experience appendicitis. Surgical scars or adhesions from surgical procedures you’ve done before can cause appendix blockage and cause inflammation.
  • Parasitic infections. Parasitic Infection in the gastrointestinal tract can spread to the appendix and trigger inflammation. Infection may occur due to viral or bacterial invasion. It causes appendicitis when it spreads to the appendix.
  • Poor hygiene and sanitation. Poor hygiene can increase your risk of being exposed to bacterial infections in the digestive system. This infection can spread to the appendix and cause appendicitis. It is important to watch what you eat and ensure you maintain proper hygiene.
