Common Treatments for Severe Asthma

Bronchial thermoplasty

If your severe asthma is not improved by any of the available treatments, doctors may recommend a surgical treatment instead. Bronchial thermoplasty [12] is a surgical procedure used for severe asthma cases.

Bronchial thermosplasty relies on the application of radiofrequency energy to the airways. The resulting heat destroys some of the smooth muscles that line the airways. When these muscles are destroyed, the airways will no longer be able to narrow due to muscular constriction.

This procedure is not a cure for asthma, but studies show [13] that it helps improve asthma symptoms. It is given in three sessions spaced three weeks from each other.
