List of Common Asthma Medications: Know Your Options

Inhaled corticosteroids

Inhaled corticosteroids, a group of anti-inflammatory drugs, are the most effective and used long-term control medications for asthma. They are known to reduce swelling and tightening in the airways. Your doctor may tell you to use these drugs for several months to experience its positive effects.

Examples of inhaled corticosteroids include:

  • Beclomethasone (Qvar RediHaler)
  • Fluticasone (Flovent HFA, Arnuity Ellipta, others)
  • Ciclesonide (Alvesco)
  • Budesonide (Pulmicort Flexhaler)
  • Mometasone (Asmanex Twisthaler)

Inhaled corticosteroids should be used regularly as they help prevent asthma attacks and other conditions associated with a poorly controlled asthma. Like every drug, inhaled corticosteroids have their side effects. For example, regular use in children may cause retarted growth. However, studies show that benefits of taking these drugs significantly outweigh the risks.

Other side effects of inhaled corticosteroids include:

  • Mouth irritation
  • Throat irritation
  • Oral yeast infection

Ensure you use a spacer and rinse your mouth with water regularly if you are using a metered dose inhaler. This will help reduce the amount of drug remaking in your mouth.
