Ipratropium
Ipratropium (Atrovent HFA) is a short-acting bronchodilator [2]. Doctors usually prescribe it to manage asthma symptoms and attacks. It is also used to treat chronic bronchitis [3] or emphysema [4]. It can be combined with SABA. Your doctor may also combine ipratropium and albuterol (Combivent) to treat asthma.
Theophylline
Theophylline is a bronchodilator that can be taken daily to treat mild asthma. Theophylline (Theo-24) reduces the lungs’ response to irritants and relaxes the airways. Theophylline is not commonly used anymore, but it is effective in relieving asthma symptoms. Your doctor may recommend regular blood tests to make sure you’re getting the correct dose.
