Necrotizing Fasciitis (Flesh Eating Bacteria): An Overview

What Are the Types of Necrotizing Fasciitis and How Often Does It Occur?

Necrotizing fasciitis can be grouped into types:

  • Monomicrobial (also called Type II): This type is usually caused by staphylococcus aureus and group A streptococcus.
  • Polymicrobial (also called Type I): This is a type of necrotizing fasciitis that can occur due to different types of bacteria. It is mostly caused by a combination of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

According to studies, necrotizing fasciitis occurs in 15 per 10,000 people. Between 2010 and now, the number of people with the condition has increased. Various Studies show that between 700 to 1,200 cases occur per year. Note that these numbers may be lower than the actual number of cases. About 1 in 3 people with necrotizing may die from the bacteria infection.
