Bladder Sling Complications

Long-term and Mild Complications

According to studies, mesh slings result in more complications than slings made from native tissue. For example, artificial mesh can lead to invasion of surrounding tissues by mesh, long-term pain, and infection. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, slings made of native tissue do not lead to these complications.

According to mesh manufacturer Boston Scientific, mesh sling surgery can lead to the following complications:

  • Fistula formation
  • Local irritation at wound site
  • Vaginal discharge [2]
  • Infection
  • Urinary tract obstruction and urine retention
  • Scarring
  • Scar contracture
  • Inflammation
  • Fatigue [3]
  • Migration of the device
  • Erosion through the urethra
  • Pain
  • Recurrence of incontinence
  • Nerve damage
  • Swelling and redness at the wound site
  • Shortness of breath
  • Bleeding
  • Vaginal extrusion [4]

Mild complications, which include short-term term pain after surgery and short-term urinary retention can be treated easily. However, long-term complications like organ perforation, recurrent infections, erosion, and vaginal extrusion are more difficult to resolve.

Doctors may recommend revision surgery for women who have long-term complications. Infections like sepsis can result in death if immediate medical attention is not received. In most cases, complications occur due to surgical technique.
