Bladder Sling Complications

What Are the Risks and Symptoms of Extrusion?

Mesh slings can lead to infection and exposure immediately after surgery or many years later. This may result in painful mesh removal surgery, and cause other complications. Women who experience this complication may feel pain when having sex urgency to urinate, incontinence, instructions and infections in the urinary tract. In some cases, no symptoms occur until the complication exacerbates. This is why it is imperative for women who experience bladder sling surgery to visit their doctor regularly. In some cases, vaginal erosion happens weeks after surgery.

According to studies, the most common symptom of vagina extrusion is the presence of “teeth in the vagina” during intercourse. It may be possible to conservatively manage an extrusion. In some cases, your doctor may recommend topical estrogen cream to treat vaginal tissues. If the incontinence persists, your doctor may recommend complete removal of the sling and replacement with a new one.
