Treatment Options for Overactive Bladder

Medications for Overactive Bladder

An overactive bladder causes the muscles in the bladder wall to contract at the wrong time. There is a group of drugs called anticholinergics that helps combat this problem by blocking the nerve signals related to bladder muscle contraction. Research also suggests that these drugs might increase the capacity of the bladder and decrease the urge to urinate.

Examples of Anticholinergic drugs [3] include:

  • Fesoterodine (Toviaz)
  • Darifenacin (Enablex)
  • Solifenacin (Vesicare)
  • Oxybutynin (Ditropan, Ditropan XL, Gelnique, Oxytrol)
  • Trospium (Sanctura)
  • Tolterodine (Detrol, Detrol LA)

Your doctor may also recommend drugs that relax a muscle at the prostate and bladder neck to help with emptying. They include:

  • Doxazosin (Cardura, Cardura XL)
  • Alfuzosin (Uroxatral)
  • Terazosin (Hytrin)
  • Tamsulosin (Flomax)
  • Silodosin (Rapaflo)
