Factors That Increases the Risk of Rupturing the ACL

There are certain factors that increase the risk of rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament. People who do not engage in sports have a lower risk of tearing their ACL compared to people who are athletes. The following factors increases one’s risk of an ACL tear:

  • The Type Of Sports You Engage In: The type of sports engaged in tells about one’s risk of tearing their ACL. Footballers, basketballers and gymnasts have a greater risk of rupturing their ACL compared to swimmers.
  • Being A Female: Generally, the joints in the female body are known to be loose compared to that of a male. Because of how loose the female joint is, females are three times more likely to rupture their ACL compared to males.
  • Putting on sport shoes that do not properly fit.
