Back Spasms: What Is It, Causes & Treatment

Overview

The most common cause of disability in the country is chronic low back pain, which affects around 13 percent of adult Americans. Back spasms are uncontrollable contractions or tensing of the muscles in the lower back, and are usually the most common source of back pain.

The symptoms range from sporadic spasms that cause just minor discomfort to persistent spasms that cause excruciating pain and make it difficult to move.

Most of the time, successful treatment for back spasms does not require surgery. If the pain is brought on by spinal nerve issues, some type of intervention can be required.
