Bulging Disk vs. Herniated Disk: What’s the Difference?

What Is a Bulging Disc?

Bulging disc may occur when large amounts of pressure on the vertebrae, causing it to move outward in the opposite direction. Studies show that people with a poor posture are more likely to have a bulging disc. A disc may experience a bulge around its entire perimeter or along a small portion. In some cases, you may also experience a series of bulging discs instead of only one. It is important to note that while the discs bulge, the outer layer of cartilage always remains intact.

Bulging discs are usually accompanied by pain. However, studies show that the bulging is not usually responsible for the pain. In most people, it is just part of the processes involved in aging. If the disc lies in position close to a nerve root, it can compress the nerve and cause inflammation. The pain may get worse or severe due to the inflammation and compression of the nerve.
