How Clavicle Fracture Occurs
A clavicle fracture occurs when it is subjected to pressure or force. Typical causes include;
- Collisions (trauma) that occur when an arm is extended, as in football, hockey, skiing, and other sports.
- Direct blows to the clavicle, like those sustained in auto accidents.
- Falls onto an extended arm or the clavicle.
- A baby going through the birth canal.
Symptoms of a Broken Collarbone
If your collarbone is broken, some of the things you may experience include:
- When a bone breaks, you might hear a snapping or grinding sound.
- A sharp ache that worsens when you move the affected area.
- The shoulder may sag downward or forward because the bone is no longer supporting it.
- Having trouble moving or elevating the arm, and you might experience a grinding sensation when you do.
- There may be soreness, swelling, or bruising.
- A visible through-the-skin bump.
- “Pins and needles” or numbness (less frequently).
- Skin bleeding from a bone that is protruding through it occasionally.
