Treatment for compression fractures

Treatment for compression fracture is focused on relieving pain, stabilizing the bones in the spine and preventing another fracture. The severity of your condition, overall health will determine the treatment.
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) sold over-the-counter (OTC) may be advised by your doctor as a pain reliever. They could also recommend prescription medicines or muscle relaxants. When using these medications, strictly follow your doctor’s recommendations.
- Bone-strengthening medications: Substances known as bisphosphonates can stabilize the bones, inhibit further bone loss, and avoid fractures. Ibandronic acid (Boniva®) and alendronic acid (Fosamax®) are two of these medications.
- Braces: Your vertebrae can be supported by a certain form of back brace. Additionally, it can lessen back pain by limiting how much you move your spine.
- Vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty: This is a minimal invasive procedure that helps relieve pain, stabilize the bones and improve mobility. During vertebroplasty [4], your provider will insert a needle in the vertebra and inject bone cement. During kyphoplasty [5], they insert an inflatable device that they fill with cement. A vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll go home the same day.
