Preventing compression fractures

You may not always be able to prevent compression fractures. But there are ways you can reduce the risk of a compression fracture from osteoporosis. They include:
- Avoid drinking alcohol excessively.
- Eat and maintain a healthy diet [6], and get enough vitamin D and calcium, which strengthen bones.
- Perform exercises recommended by your physical therapist.
- Quit smoking and using other tobacco products, since nicotine weakens bones and causes cancer.
- Visit your provider regularly for checkups, and take medications as prescribed to slow bone loss if you’re at risk of osteoporosis.
