Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is a term used to describe the high blood pressure that occurs in pregnant women. It usually occurs in women who are at least 20 weeks into their pregnancy. It can also occur in the early stages of pregnancy or after pregnancy. Asides an increase in blood pressure, preeclampsia is also characterized by pain under the right rib cage. Other symptoms that may occur in women with this condition include:

  • Severe headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Decreased urination
  • Protein in urine [5]
  • Kidney or liver problems
  • Blurred vision or sensitivity to light
  • Shortness of breath

It would help to contact your doctor to check your blood pressure during prenatal care visits. Preeclampsia symptoms such as shortness of breath, blurred vision, and pain under the right rib cage require immediate medical attention. If left untreated, preeclampsia can cause death of mother and baby.
